Frequently Experienced Dental Emergencies
The best way to deal with emergency scenarios that may arise is to educate yourself so that you can be prepared to handle whatever situation arises.
Toothachesoften indicate a bigger problem with your teeth. They are not typically a true emergency, but we advise you to schedule an appointment for an evaluation as soon as possible. Once a tooth becomes painful, it can rapidly deteriorate and result in much more pain and more costly dentistry.
Broken or fractured teethneed urgent attention if there is severe sensitivity and/or blood coming from the middle of the tooth. This is a sign that the nerve of the tooth has been uncovered. These teeth may need root canal therapy to be saved. Minor chips and tiny cracks that are only mildly sensitive or not sensitive at all are not an emergency, but we will do our best to make sure you are seen for an evaluation as soon as possible to determine if treatment is needed.
A knocked Out Toothis a true dental emergency, and success of treatment is highly time sensitive. The first thing to do is find the tooth, pick it up by the crown (do not touch the root) and gently rinse it under clean water. Make no attempt to dry the tooth and touch it as little as possible. Try to put the tooth back in the socket. If that is not an option, place it in a cup of milk.
